Few are aware that the largest maritime disaster in American History was not The Titanic. Just after the end of the United States Civil War over 1,900 perished on April 27, 1865 when the wood hulled steamer, The Sultana, exploded on the Mississippi River while heading north near Marion, Arkansas.
